We also run half-day classes teaching nature-inspired stress reduction skills on farms in Berks and Wilts.

THE LOCATION

Our retreat is nestled in Narnia-style woodlands on a 690-acre organic farming estate with three stunning lakes to wander around or dip in for wild swims. The wood-fired sauna offers panoramic views of the lake, and a place of respite to enjoy the warmth of the sun. The winding paths make for a magical jaunt and the perfect chance for you to fully reconnect with nature.

Wasing Park’s precious landscape offers you ancient trees, towering pines, historic rhododendron walks, protected wildlife and newly blooming flowers – and at this time of year the blue bells should be out.

HOW IT WORKS

Botanic Shed retreats are unique, transformational retreats, a time to journey within, to cleanse, realign and awaken a deeper connection with nature.

This one-day programme will see you learn and practice how to communicate with your inner nature - and with plants and trees.

It will also teach you herbal medicine skills to understand your gut health, cutting edge breathwork techniques, yoga, meditation and you will receive deep healing therapies to bring your body into harmony. This helps you to set foundations for a new time of growth and self-understanding - going forward, forever. April is a beautiful month to give yourself a whole day immersed in nature. And as spring glows, so shall you, under the expert guidance of some incredible women, trees and plants of the surrounding woodlands.

Getting a big dose of Vitamin N can do incredible things for your health, creativity and productivity. This day in the woods should affect you far more than several months of weekly mindfulness sessions (ref. RHS study with University of Sheffield, 2021). Add to this the deep learning and healing that this retreat involves, and you will without doubt find this to be a transformational experience that will instill you with strength, resilience and a deep sense of calm.

WILD SWIM AND SAUNA

On this retreat you will experience Wasing's authentic Scandinavian sauna and enjoy an invigorating wild swim in the woodland lake.

The benefits of cold-water immersion don’t just provide relief from the traumas of the past few years, but the long-term effects on the body have long been scientifically proven. We love it so much that we’ve been swimming here in the lake right through the year. . . swimming between ice sheets at times and feeling amazing for it!

Enjoy an invigorating wild swim in the woodland lake and 2 hours in the afternoon at the authentic wood-fired Scandinavian sauna with panoramic views of the lake. This is a quintessentially magical sanctuary to enjoy the warmth of the sun and healing energy of the trees and water.

Hot and cold immersion provides a host of benefits for your well-being - creating feelings of positive physical, emotional and mental health, and deepening social connections.

HERBAL MEDICINE WORKSHOP

Plants that promote resilience: an interactive herbal medicine & foraging session

This two-hour workshop will teach you vital skills about how to understand and manage your gut health.

We will take you on a foraging walk, then teach you how to turn plants into remedies that promote resilience and help you to manage sleep patterns and stress.

You will also learn how to create plant-based face creams using, for example, the beautiful scents of Pelargonium graveolens/spp geranium essential oil and floral water to make a nourishing astringent, and moistening face cream.

BREATH WALK

Breath Walk is a simple but effective science that teaches you to breath properly by combining specific conscious breath patterns, conscious breathing and synchronised walking along with directed awareness. It's meditative and mindful practice brings a sense of calm and clarity, reuniting mind, body and spirit and regaining connectedness to self.

Breath, posture and rhythm help alter the emotions to bring mental clarity, and restore inner confidence and vitality. Primal sound and mantra activate the brain, inducing different moods, changing inner dialogue and breaking patterns.

The practice triggers positive changes in the body, increasing communication in the brain breaking patterns that give us negative experiences.

Breath Walk gives you the tools that will directly affect your mind and flow of thought, helping to relieve fatigue, reduce stress, strengthen immunity, improving circulation, mood swings and stamina.

REIKI & REFLEXOLOGY

The term “reiki” comes from the Japanese words “rei,” meaning universal, and “ki,” which means vital life force energy that flows through all living things. Some practitioners describe reiki as acupuncture without needles.

Reiki is a complementary health approach in which practitioners place their hands on or just above different areas of the body. It’s based on an Eastern medicine belief that living beings have energy fields that support their health and vitality. Reiki practitioners focus on sensing energy blocks and moving the energy for the greatest good of the client.

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that is an energy healing, foot massage in essence. The main principle of reflexology is that by massaging and applying pressure to parts of the feet, corresponding areas of the body will reap the benefits. In reflexology, the feet are miniature maps of the body’s anatomy. Every part of the anatomy system can be accessed and bought back into balance through reflexology.

French Psychologist Paul Diel says: 'The foot represents the state of destiny."

KUNDALINI YOGA

Kundalini yoga is a form of yoga that involves chanting, singing, breathing exercises, and repetitive poses.

Its purpose is to activate your Kundalini energy, or shakti. This is a spiritual energy that’s said to be located at the base of your spine.

As Kundalini yoga awakens this energy, it’s supposed to enhance your awareness and help you move past your ego. Sometimes, the practice is also called the “yoga of awareness”.

GARDENING

Gardening (flower and herb growing)

While we sit beside the fire and as the day comes to an end, you will all be given the opportunity to sow a tray of organic seeds, using the right growing medium, so you have something to take home to  remind yourself of all you have learnt, and the new way forward with nature as your leading language and best friend.

SOUND BATH MEDITATION

We will end the day with a sound meditation in the form of a gong bath where you will lie under blankets and relax deeply. Gong baths and anxiety are reduced ~ inner harmony regained ~ a deeper connection to yourself ~ releases old patterns ~ increases clarity of mind ~ unity of mind, body and soul ~ stimulates cell renewal and healing ~ improves creativity ~ improves sleep.

The wisdom traditions teach that illness is a symptom of imbalance. Sound energy healing focuses on creating vibrations that improve overall health and wellness. “Gongs open up your chakras and often release a lot of blocked energy, much like acupuncture or massage can do – it really is a sound massage.”

A gong bath is excellent therapy for depression, fatigue, feelings of separation, loneliness, anger, fear, hostility and many other conditions caused by a lack of balance and harmony in the body and mind.

In the simplest terms, the gong awakens innate wholeness and guides the body to a state of greater balance and harmony.

Lara Cowan

Lara set up Botanic Shed as a blog in 2015 while she was running the Caribbean-based travel and property company, Grenadine Escape. In 2020, she decided to set up the Botanic Shed as a community to bring nature connection to the forefront of our daily lives as the primary means to maintain good holistic health. The pressure on our immune systems, the stress epidemic crisis and lack of a nature-based approach for preventative health, amplified also as a result of the COVID pandemic, has made Lara's vision for Botanic Shed even more timely.

She is an RHS-trained horticulturalist, therapeutic horticulture facilitator and akashic record reader and is passionate about the relationship between plants and human health.

Lara was 21, with her baby girl in her arms, living in St Vincent and the Grenadines when she set up her first business. She went on to become an award-winning travel and property entrepreneur, studying horticulture and volunteering for mental health and gardening charities in her spare time.

Along the way, she has also squeezed in developing a mindfulness coaching business with former monk and interfaith chaplain at Imperial College, Karuna Priya, and featured in the FT, How to Spend It and the Telegraph. But foremost, she says, she is a mum and a big sister.

Lara’s purpose shines through her work, where she has carved out a niche in creating the Botanic Shed School of Nature. She is a regular broadcaster on BBC Radio Oxford and for the Journal of Biophilic Design, talking about ways to access the healing power of nature.

“The human is a map of emotions and possibilities. This school of nature is designed to teach people how to navigate it.”

Karen Neate

Karen is a qualified sound bath practitioner, Yin, Kundalini and mindful yoga teacher and reiki master.

Karen’s holistic journey started at 16 when she became a vegetarian with a keen interest in healthy nutritional food. This led to a lifelong interest in diet and lifestyle, and she still leads workshops on superfoods. She then became a reiki master, holistic massage and Indian head massage practitioner, before deciding to train as a yoga instructor. Accumulating more than 25 years’ experience of dipping in and out of a wide range of yoga styles, Karen enrolled first in a Level 1 Kundalini Yoga course, followed by a 220-hour Mindful Yoga Course accredited by Yoga Alliance and The Minded Institute.
